The Yes Men
The Yes Men
...Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno are ‘The Yes Men’, anti-globalisation activists who use unusual, and radical, methods to attack the World Trade Organisation. Posing as a representative of the WTO, the mythical Granwyth Hulatberi, Andy takes part in a debate on trade on European television.
(...)
THE YES MEN use satire in an attempt to get people to think more about the trade relationship between the First and Third Worlds, and they’re pretty savage and uncompromising about it. For some people, posing as representatives of the WTO, or of a big corporation like McDonalds, might seem TOO radical, too over the top. But they certainly get their message across though, of course, nothing really changes. This well-paced documentary by Chris Smith, Dan Ollman and Sarah Price follows Andy and Mike and some of their friends as they rehearse and then carry out their extraordinary schemes, and, for anyone sympathetic with their cause, the film will be both a lot of fun AND thought-provoking... The Yes Men

Paraguayan Hammock
...Though this film by Paz Encina, from 2006, is said to be the first produced in Paraguay in decades, it has an artistic refinement and an emotional power that allow it to transcend all novelty value and vault to the front lines of world cinema. Its sixty-eight minutes carry Ramón and Cándida (Ramón Del Rio and Georgina Genes), an aging couple living in the deep country, from sunrise, when they hang their old hammock between two trees in a clearing, to sunset, when they take it in.
Settled in its tenuous grasp, they talk about the heat, the rain, the dog that won’t stop barking, the war, and their son, Máximo, who is doing his military service and hasn’t been heard from lately. The father lives in hope, the mother in fear, and scenes of their daily rounds of labor and rest—images of a contemplative pictorial exaltation—are joined by voice-over flashbacks revealing the story of their son’s departure and the rumors that followed. Encina’s film, balanced exquisitely between the concrete and the abstract, between the specific and the absolute, is a quietly devastating indictment of the eternal waste of youth as cannon fodder in this and all wars... Hamaca Paraguaya
Turtles Can Fly
...is set in Ghorbadi’s native Kurdistan on the eve of the American invasion of Iraq. Thirteen-year-old Soran (Soran Ebrahim) is known as “Satellite,” for his installation of dishes and antennae for local villages looking for news of Saddam. He is the dynamic leader of the children, organizing the dangerous but necessary sweeping and clearing of the minefields. He then arranges trade-ins for the unexploded mines. The industrious Satellite falls for an unlikely orphan (Avaz Latif), a sad-faced girl traveling with her brother Henkov (Hirsh Feyssal), who appears to have the gift of clairvoyance. The siblings are care-taking a three-year-old, whose connection to the pair is discovered as harsh truths are unveiled.
The devastation to this land and its inhabitants is revealed in the matter-of-fact perspective of the children and is equally displayed with every poignant detail of its unbearable nature. The exquisitely haunting mountains play backdrop to violence and tragedy, but at the same time the heart and humor of the children is an undeniable force.
"Turtles Can Fly" won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian and the Silver Bear at Chicago and is the Iranian entry to the Academy for 2004 Foreign Film consideration... (MovieJungle)
(...)
(Cineman)

(Documentales Elrond)
The Future of Food
...is an eye-opening documentary. While I found its focus on the Monsanto Company to be one-sided, I have no information to dispute many of the claims made therein. Like most edgy documentaries these days, this is a film about real people and their real stories. If you disagree with their presentation and interpretation of the facts, the strong reaction and discussion is a good thing.(...)
Fascinating and content rich, "The Future of Food" is a technical delight which, at first, has the feel of a high school educational film strip and ultimately draws you in with the fear that nature may be changed forever. And forever, is, well, forever... (Entertainment Insider)
A Tornallom

Sinopsis

Baraka
(Linkara)
Baraka
...Baraka, an ancient Sufi word with forms in many languages, translates as a blessing, or as the breath or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds. A transcendently poetic tour of the globe, Baraka was shot in breathtaking 70mm in 24 countries on six continents. A non-conventional documentary, Baraka was filmed entirely without dialogue in a stunning cascade of crystalline, time-lapse images. Set to the life affirming rhythms of varied religious rituals and nature's own raw bear, Baraka is a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with the Earth. Spanning such diverse locales as China, Brazil, Kuwait and major U.S. and European sites, Baraka captures not only the harmony, but also the calamity that humans and nature have visited upon the Earth. However, mere words do not do the film justice - Baraka must be seen, felt and experienced to be understood. Baraka has won the Eddie for Best Edited Documentary and the FIPRESCI Prize for Out-of-Competition at the Montreal World Film Festival. (D-List)

Naturaleza muerta
